Sorry, meghan, that it took me so long to come up with an answer, but I'm still not sure about the meaning of the song. I can't decide whether the song's about a loving disappointment and all the words like "battlefield" and "the buys on the front line" are metaphors for growing up and getting over a disappointment in life OR it's really about war or some kind of battles. Maybe it's a mixture of both? He, lying in the trench, thinking about his love and home which he's about to lose. Or maybe I'm just too complicated.

I don't know and I think my english is not good enough to understand a "hidden message" in the song...But maybe you're right, maybe...

As I've just read in an interview with Ben (click me) that the inspiration for their album came from a failure of a relationship I now am convinced that the song is "simply" about a loving disappointment...
