Best and worst concerts ever Empty
PostSubject: Best and worst concerts ever   Best and worst concerts ever EmptyFri 16 Apr 2010 - 13:47

I love making lists and putting everything in an order (yeah, I think, it's the German in me...), so I opened this thread to give you the chance to tell us about your best and your worst concert experience so far. And of course it would be great to know the reason for that classification.
I know that's really difficult, but I'll give it a try... I've attended many good and sometimes even long-awaited concerts (like a completely rainy gig of Paul McCartney which I've been dreaming of for my whole life and when he finally came on stage I couldn't help crying...), but the one that will stay on my mind propably forever is the Munich concert of Snow Patrol last May. They've played all my favorite songs, the audience was gorgeous, the band in perfect mood and the show was simply awesome (video show, sing-a-long-contests, many interaction between the singer and the audience). I came to the concert with almost no expectations and was blown away.
The worst concert I've ever been to was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 2003 in Munich. The support act was a real pain in the arse and the main act not much better at that time. It was all too loud, the crowd was strange and I can't remember one song as everything sounded the same. But I also blame it on the location, the weather and my mood on that day.

Oh me too! It's something I do with all my albums.

My worst concert experience was (and you're going to be surprised at this) was probably The Killers in Munich last year. It came just after the amazing Berlin concert (where I was barrier, met the band, and basically everything went right). I'm sure the band were on top form but a) I hate the Zenith as a venue, b) I got there too late so couldn't join my friends in the pit, c) I spent the first few songs squashed up against the chest of a security guard who was pretending to be a pit barrier as the metal barrier didn't reach across the whole hall, d) When I decided to move further back, it took me a whole song to get through the crowds, e) the crowd were very aggressive and not really there for the music from what I could tell. My friends in the pit almost lost their footing during Spaceman and got thrown about the mosh pit all concert. They were so intent on not getting crushed that they couldn't really enjoy the concert.

From a musical point of view, the worst thing was Jan Delay, a German hip-hop star. I had to endure him at two festivals last year. Terrible. His band and the background singers were good but I just find him so disgusting. He was playing between Bloc Party and Mando Diao at Rock im Park and before Mando Diao and Franz Ferdinand at Energy in the Park in Munich so I was kind of forced to put up with him....

My best concerts were (a selection):
The Killers, Berlin, March 2009 (see above)
The Killers, Hard Rock Calling, June 2009 (an epic run to the barrier across half of Hyde Park and an exhilerating performance, also the first time I'd seen them in London)
The Killers, Cologne, August 2008 (the setting (directly in front of the Cologne cathedral), the weather, the company, first time seeing the Killers since the Sam's Town tour and rediscovering their amazing live show, etc)
Bon Jovi, Munich and Manchester, May and June 2008 (don't laugh, they are amazing live and those two dates had particularly amazing setlists and were great all round experiences)
Bon Jovi, Wembley, June 1995 (my first and only time front row of a Bon Jovi concert, nowadays you have to camp out to get front row...)

I love your post! yay
The Zenith in Munich is probably the worst concert location ever. All the more I was impressed by the great sound on the Snow Patrol gig there.
And no, I don't laugh about Bon Jovi - they're supposed to be one of the best live bands ever, as far as I heard.

Steven (the Killers lighting guy) said in his blog that the Zenith was "in dire need of never being used as a concert venue ever again".... Embarrassing. I can't wait for the new small Olympiahalle to be completed and opened so that we have a decent medium-sized venue in Munich.

I swore I'd never go back after the Killers concert but I ended up going to see 30 Seconds to Mars there. And yes, it was a great concert but I heard that the sound was it's usual terrible quality further back. And the queueing and admission procedure was a chaotic disaster.

Bon Jovi are great live no matter what you think about the music. And I will admit that I haven't really listened to their latest album. And I am much more of an "old school" fan and yes the concerts are ridiculously expensive but I will always go and see them on tour. This year I'll see them for the 14th and 15th time.
